We have three broad program areas: (1) Culture, Language and Human Development, (2) Learning, Teaching, and Teacher Education, and (3) Policy, Program Evaluation, and Research Methods.

Once enrolled, students may add optional interdisciplinary doctoral emphases that include study in Applied Linguistics; Black Studies; Cognitive Science; Environment and Society; Feminist Studies; Global Studies; Information Technology and Society; Language, Interaction, and Social Organization; Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences; and Writing Studies. Please note that the Department of Education does not train K-12 teachers or grant teaching credentials; prospective teachers are instead encouraged to apply to the Teacher Education Program.
